The buzz around anime is real. With more numbers of it being created and imported back to back, it was only a matter of time before the platforms recognized by streaming and distributing them would start adapting originals.

We are talking about Crunchyroll releasing its inaugural slate of original programming in 2020. Among the shows released, The God of High School made its debut. This anime is based on the manhwa of the same name, created by Park Yongje and published by Webtoon.

The anime narrates the story of Jin Mori, a 17-year-old high school student. He is a gifted martial artist from Seoul, South Korea. The show also follows his friends.

Together, they borrow power from mythical creatures and gods to compete in a tournament sponsored by a shady corporation meant to determine the strongest scholar. The winner of the tournament will be “The God of High School”. They shall have their wish granted by the company. 

The show premiered in the late summer of 2020 and featured 13 episodes with animation done by MAPPA.

In general, the makers take a few things into consideration when it comes to the renewal of the anime. It includes the reception of the show by the audience and the remaining source material to be further adapted. 

Compared to the other anime in the same summer lineup, The God of High School was not so acclaimed. However, it did not remain unpopular either. Many people liked the show and admired the plot, animation, and other elements. It received a massive viewership.

The source material comprises over 300 chapters. According to the fans, the first season of 13 episodes ends in Chapter 112, which highlights that the new season is supposed to happen if the creators of the show stick to their loyalty to the source material. The final episode of the first season ended with Mori losing his memories as a God and Mira and Daewi declaring that they must seek out the Monkey King if they want to restore them. The season ended with a cliffhanger. It solidifies the necessity of the new season and makes the fans more hopeful.

As the season one finale ended with a cliffhanger, the subsequent season will be expected to take the story ahead. 

It will entail the events occurring in the Jin Taejin Arc starting from Chapter 113 of the Webtoon. Apparently, it will be a series involving flashbacks about Jin Mori’s grandfather, Jin Taejin, as he ventured to North Korea to retrieve a rumored Nuclear weapon being kept there. 

Cut to the present day, after the events occurred in the God of High School Tournament, Park Mubong enters the spotlight as an anti-hero. The Gods also make their appearance. It is where the real battle for the protagonist shall begin.

While there has been no update about the anime’s renewal for subsequent seasons, in the meantime, you can stream the first season. The God of High School is available to stream on Crunchyroll and HBO Max.

• Do you know that God of High School is highly inspired by Dragon Ball Z? If you watch it closely, you will realize plenty of similarities between the two. Although the comparison between them would be wrong, it is interesting to see how some shows improve upon the ideas that are introduced in other series. Yong-Je Park has cited Dragon Ball as a specific influence on the style and pacing of this show.
  
• The God of High School anime has a video game too. It has been extremely popular all across South Korea, as a result of which the show has pursued other forms of media before becoming an anime. Currently, two God of High School video games, both mobile RPGs have been released.
  
• To animate the movements of the characters more realistically, the makers used motion capture software. The show has been animated in the traditional 2D format. However, MAPPA decided to use motion capture, especially for the fight scenes. Director Sungho Park was successfully able to contact the stunt team to come and shoot these scenes.
  
• The protagonist on the show, Jin Mori, is voiced by artist Tatsumaru Tachibana. He has previously worked on other popular anime, such as Uzumaki and Kabukichou Sherlock. Interestingly, Jim credits his realistic emotions in the exhausting and screaming scenes to his theatre experience. The voice actor strengthened his voice there.
  
• Director Sungho Park admitted that although some members of the team had some level of experience with martial arts, he did not. Thus, he went on to educate himself as much as he could through books and YouTube. God of High School features various fighting styles, such as Eastern sword-fighting, Taekwondo, Wrestling, Tai Chi, and Karate.
